An artificial prosthesis is used in unilateral total knee replacement (TKR) to replace a severely damaged or arthritic knee joint (one knee only). When conservative treatments (medication, injections, physical therapy) are ineffective, it is usually done to ease pain and restore function.
Typical Causes of Surgery:
- The most frequent cause is osteoarthritis.
- Either inflammatory arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
- Post-traumatic arthritis following a fracture or damage to the knee.
- Bone death brought on by inadequate blood flow is known as avascular necrosis.
- Severe deformity (knock-knee or bowleg).
Symptoms Leading to Knee Replacement:
- Chronic Pain – Persistent even at rest or at night.
- Stiffness & Swelling – Reduced range of motion.
- Difficulty Walking – Limping, needing a cane/walker.
- Failed Non-Surgical Treatments – Medications, PT, injections no longer help.
- Knee Deformity – Visible bowing or instability.
